Actually Thursday…….yes, it really is this time

I’ve still got the lurgy.  I’m supposed to be at a seminar but instead I’m curled up eating comfort food on the sofa cuddling the dog.

My go to, trashy, comfort food is my Nanny Flo’s cheese on beans on ham on toast.  And it has to be white toast.  That was lunch.  It was good.  I’m probably nearly better.

Now it’s supper time and it’s Heinz cream of tomato with a cheese toast sandwich (by which I mean a cheese sandwich made with toast so the cheese isn’t melted as opposed to a toasted cheese sandwich).  Food always makes me feel better.

I had a clear out of my ingredients cupboard today – decided it’s time to chuck out all that stuff that has a sell by date of 2013!  There wasn’t that much but I did have a bunch of seeds, old nuts, stale suet and old rolled oats that really weren’t salvageable for human consumption so I decided to try my hand at fat balls for the birds.  Not quite sure how I am going to store them but much to the disgust of the dog, who is firm in her belief that any food not being consumed by me should definitely be her first refusal, I now have a winter long supply!

Hopefully food over winter will encourage my family of blue tits back to nesting in the garden again next year.  I was ridiculously pleased to hear the chicks tweeting away in the tit box I had apparently put up in the “wrong” place last autumn back in the spring – clearly I’m not as much of a bird homing failure as I had believed myself to be!

And today I’m sharing a tip from Rachel Khoo.  I really love her on TV, particularly her ability to cook such fab looking food on what looks like an ancient camping stove.  I think what I like about her most is that she really knows her stuff.  This tip is so, so, so simple that it’s really quite obvious and I don’t know why I haven’t been doing it for years but now that I know it I use it all the time and it’s this:  when scraping food up from the chopping board, use the back of the knife to scrape with and you won’t dull your blades.  Isn’t that genius?
