Handy dandy tip for today – Zest!

I have tried searching high and low on the web and writing to Waitrose and asking, even pleading with them to start to sell citrus fruit zest in frozen pouches but so far all I have managed to find is a company who sell it by the kilo for commercial kitchens.

I don’t have that much spare space in my freezer so that’s not going to work!

But it did get me thinking about the issue.  So many recipes call for a teaspoon of lemon zest or the zest of one orange and I for one never have a lemon or an orange hanging around just at the right time so I end up buying a whole bag of them and, invariably see half of them going to waste.

Well, no more of that.

If you are going to eat fruit, there is absolutely no reason for it to have the zest in tact – so before you slice a lemon for your gin and tonic, get out your kitchen rasp and zest it and freeze it.  The same goes with all citrus fruit – my daughter did complain about her breakfast grapefruit looking a bit shabby this morning but she soon got over it (when I threatened to give her sprouts for breakfast tomorrow if she didn’t stop whining!).  Ice cube trays make the ideal receptacle.

And in my budget conscious zeal, I have just zested and juiced a whole load of limes which weren’t really going to last another few days and would other wise have ended up on the compost heap.

I bet Waitrose start selling it next week!
